Sustainability Development Executive, Andrea Gonzalez, has recently written a report for the Global Compact – one of the world’s largest corporate sustainability organizations supported by the United Nations. The report – one of two editorial contributions for the organization’s Spanish division – outlines the various commitments Intercruises has made in order to help combat its carbon footprint. Below you can find the English version of the report:

Intercruises has been incorporating sustainability into its practices since 2011. During that same year, we began to monitor our environmental indicators in order to calculate our carbon footprint o later develop objectives for reducing them. The principle focus was to reduce our consumption of raw materials (including paper and electricity).

Throughout the years, Intercruises head office has taken the following measurements:

  • Movement detectors for room lighting
  • Automatic switches for lights and climate control after hours
  • Air conditioning and heating is calibrated so that it doesn’t go below 26° C in the summer, or over 21° C in the winter.
  • Use of energy-saving mode on all computer equipment.
  • Limitation of water flow in taps and cisterns.
  • Use of high energy-efficient equipment (Energy Star)
  • Access to meeting rooms and applications to facilitate effective distance meetings to avoid unnecessary travelling.
  • Regular internal communication campaigns focused on the promotion of waste reduction and the importance of reusing and recycling
  • Regular awareness sessions for employees on good environmental practices

During 2016, we aligned our commitments with those of the Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) – 2030 United Nations Agenda. One of Intercruises’ priority areas became the reduction of our carbon footprint, and we extended our monitoring coverage to include all offices that hold Travelife accreditation (currently 16 offices globally). Following this, we produced a consolidated report regarding the carbon footprint at group level, establishing the following commitments and future goals necessary to reduce our carbon footprint:

  • Reduce the carbon footprint by 30% in 2030 compared to the levels of FY 14/15.
  • Plan to reduce at least 1% Ton CO2 / FTE per year.
  • Limit paper consumption (number of reams / FTE).
  • Limit water consumption to 40L / FTE / per day.
  • Reduce energy consumption by 2.5% kWh / FTE.
  • Recycle at least 30% of generated waste.

Endeavoring to compensate for our carbon footprint..

In 2017, we funded a project to neutralize the carbon footprint, investing in the generation of wind energy in China (CECIC Zhangbei Dayangzhuang Wind Farm Project). The emissions produced by our head office were compensated in FY 15/16.

  • Since FY14/15, our headquarters has reduced its carbon footprint by 20.88%
  • 280 tons of CO2 have been neutralized.
  • Since FY11/12, we have reduced our paper consumption by 85% per person.
  • The electricity consumption since the change of office has dropped by 3.8%.
  • Almost 60% of the garbage we generate is classified for recycling.

The tourism sector and specifically the cruise industry has been working with ports, destinations and suppliers towards a business model with low carbon emissions, which is key to the fight against climate change. With the perspective of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, Intercruises we will continue its commitment to achieve the neutrality of our activities.
